DMV Student Illuminates with his writing skills...

As many of you know, I'm also in the education profession. Many times people look at teachers as ones that impact the lives of the youth. This is true in part. The real deal is that the experience also involves meeting youth that will, in turn, impact your life. I've been blessed to work with a student this year that has impressed me with his level of intelligence, love for literature and astounding writing ability. I was even able to vibe with this brother and have conversations about poetry as well as subjects like the versatility of artists like rap icons like Rakim, Common, and Krs- One and world reknown poets like Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes..WOW! In a time where the youth idea of classic lyricism is Gucci Mane or Lil Wayne, this was refreshing. I would see the brother at break time with his pen and pad, listening to his Ipod and I'd ask him, " what are listening to"? He'd reply with something like, "The Bridge Is Over-BDP"...And I'd just smile. This brother spends his spare time writing some of the most thought provoked material. Here's an excerpt from a poem this remarkably intelligent high schooler wrote...dig it:::

"How would birds feed their chicks if Worms didnt Exsist...How would we travel if there was no trace of any transportation besides our feet...What would we do if we couldn't feed because we had no mouth in which to eat...How could you ever learn from your mistakes if never going through disappointment or Defeat...Can you still make a Castle without sand on a Beach??"~ Chris Harrison a/k/a POPS
